Vissudha: The Throat Chakra
Element: Sound
Color: Bright blue
Identity: Creative
Archetype: Communication/Masked self
Developmental Age: 7 to 12 years
Right: To speak and be heard
Vissudha’s element is sound, the purifying resonance that pertains to our own, unique vibrations. As we move above the heart, we discover the subtle energies of the upper chakras that bring to us freedom from the structures of the bottom chakras. As we explore the vibrational rhythms of life, we approach the symbolic representations of thoughts, words, or images that make up our consciousness and ways of communicating. The symbols of our communication allow us to resonate with one another, creating synchronicity in our vibrations. This requires both form and flexibility. We build off of the form of the lower four chakras in order to open up to the liberation of the fifth chakra.
Vissudha means “purification”, a process found within self-expression, where our inner selves can be heard in the outside world. This chakra is a door between the mind and body, where our unconscious thoughts can exit, becoming a conscious part of the outer world. The voice is a prime means of self-expression, as it provides means to express our truths with strength and authenticity. The voice is an indicator of a healthy fifth chakra as it provides the means of communication. When in good health, the throat chakra will create a clear, resonant voice that speaks truthfully, concisely, and courageously.
Self-expression can also find itself through creativity. As we free ourselves from structure, our creative forces come through in order to connect our liberated minds with the outside, manifested world. As we create, we take part in a form of divine communication. It’s essential to a healthy throat chakra that we have the freedom to express ourselves. When we are trapped in fear, our shoulder tense, our airway tightened, our neck may stiffen. The inclination to hide or avoid the truth is a biological response to danger. When an animal finds themselves in a life or death situation, they may freeze and become silent in order to become as inconspicuous as possible. Although this instinct is natural, chronic fear will inevitably shut down this chakra.
